Herniated Disc

Herniated Disc is an injury of the intervertebral disc of the spine, which commonly happened in the low back rather than the neck.

It characterized by the damage of the outer layer (fibrous ring) of the disc with subsequent leakage of the gelatinous internal part (nucleus polposus).

At Healing Hands Chiropractic Singapore, our main goal is to get to the root of the issue and handle it with precise non-invasive techniques that help relieve pain altogether. Remember, you do not have to live in pain as Healing Hands Chiropractic Singapore has the solutions.

Stages to a Herniated Disc

stages to a disc herniation

The damage of the disc generally does not cause direct pain, even though low back pain associated with it.

Leg pain can be caused by a disc herniation when the nucleus polposus exits the fibrous ring and ends up pressing on the spinal nerve roots, which are located just behind the disc itself.

This pain, which usually is sharp in quality, generally involves “nerve symptoms” such as tingling (pins & needles), numbness sensation, weakness of the leg and foot, atrophy (loss of tone) of the muscles of leg and foot. Even if it is not a rule, low back pain often goes with it because all of the lower back muscles will go into spasm to protect the spine and prevent further injury during the acute stage of inflammation.

What can cause a Herniated Disc?

To injure an intervertebral disc, you need to create millions of local micro-traumas, usually related to wrong lifting technique, prolonged bad postures, sitting and misalignments. When a vertebra or the pelvis is misaligned (locked in the wrong position), the spine will not be able to distribute the loads correctly from our daily activities. It creates much more stress on the discs, causing damage over time.

How do you prevent Herniated Disc?

As we mentioned before, a disc herniation does not come up overnight, but it takes a long time to manifest. To avoid the possibility of a disc injury, we need to be more aware of how we complete tasks of daily living. A general rule when you do unusual movements or hold prolonged positions, which may compromise your back, is to keep an engaged (contracted) core and a straight spine.

  1. Changing your lifting technique to avoid too much load on your low back; do it by using your legs and glutes while lifting rather than bending forward and straining your back.
  2. Changing the way you sit. Sitting down in a slouched position is one of the postures that put more load on your lower back discs than anything else. So if you are driving or sitting in front of a computer too long, make sure that you have back support. Also, get up and walk around to keep your lower back stabilizing muscles awake and functioning.
  3. Brisk walking with a good arm swing to have a healthy back and a balanced core strength. There are many good exercises to create more support for your low back. But most of them are somewhat difficult to accomplish safely, and they have to be done under supervision to avoid further injury. So looking up “exercises for low back pain” on Youtube often is not such a good idea! We have written an article all about lower back pain & how to manage lower back pain.
  4. Misalignments are also a contributing factor for disc herniation. Chiropractic can be very useful both for prevention and correction. In fact, at Healing Hands Chiropractic Singapore, our main aim is to analyze the body and find those blockages that alter the function of the spine. Getting rid of misaligned vertebrae allows the body to go back to proper function slowly. It creates more support and stability for our backs and discs.
