Knee Pain

Knee Pain can be caused by a myriad of reasons. The reasons can be due to mechanical issues, injuries, and/or arthritis.

The knee joint is vulnerable in many ways (e.g. age, obesity, family history, repetitive and overuse) and all of these could cause pain in the knee over time.

With Healing Hands and our chiropractic care, such issues can be corrected so you can live pain-free.

"PAIN is a warning signal by the body and is the LAST symptom to appear. If left untreated, it becomes CHRONIC"

Common Causes of Knee Pain

Sprain/strain –  Strain refers to the overstretching and tearing of the muscles or tendons in the knee joint, whereas sprain indicates an overstretched or tearing of the ligaments in the knee. Physical tests specific to the knee joint can be applied to determine if additional studies like X-rays, CT scans or MRI’s are needed to confirm which structures are affected.

Osteoarthritis – Pain in the knee joint due to degeneration and/ or wearing out of the joints cartilage that can lead to instability of the joint.

Rheumatoid Arthritis – An autoimmune inflammatory disorder that is chronic in nature. This can cause painful swelling around the knee, joint deformity also can occur due to bone erosion which leads to instability in the joint if left untreated.

Bursitis – This is an inflammation of a bursa (fluid-filled soft-tissue sac) in the joint which often occurs due to repetitive overuse or injury to the knee.

Tendonitis – This pain is due to the inflammation of any of the tendons in the knee caused by overuse or injury. It most commonly occurs in the front of the knee (patellar tendon). This type of pain is often made worse when climbing, taking stairs, or walking up an uphill or incline. The patient will unable to bend the knee or move freely.

Excess Weight – Being overweight or obese increases stress on your knee joints, even during ordinary activities such as walking or going up and down the stairs. It also increases your risk of osteoarthritis by accelerating the breakdown of joint cartilage.

Knee Pain Preventions

Chiropractic Care – Through Chiropractic care can improve the knee joints mobility, balance and overall function as it works synergistically/connected with the movements of the 24 moveable segments of the spine, hip joints, and ankle joints. It can also help to prevent future injuries relating to the knee.

Maintain optimum weight– Maintaining a healthy weight can help to reduce the stress on the joints of the knee. Although, there are other factors that lead to the premature deterioration of the knee, keeping a healthy weight can reduce the impact of bad posture, improper biomechanics and other mechanical issues that may be present. Remember, every extra kilogram can greatly increase the pressure in not just in the knee but all the other weight-bearing joints thus increase the risk of injuries and wear and tear.

Exercise – Proper and specific exercises and stretches that target the cause of the pain can go a long way to getting back to normalcy. However, it’s important to know the cause of the problem and restoring the motion/mobility in the knee is a good start but it must get there first. Imbalanced and muscles that are weak or stiff often lead to knee injuries as they fail to support and protect the joint causing sprain/strains. Ability to regularly exercise that focuses on strength, flexibility, and endurance in the joint will greatly improve the health and reduce the stress on the knees.
